Events update: Cupcakes and Fizz – When:
Friday, April 20th, 2012JCI World President visits Sheffield!
Monday, January 30th, 2012
The 2012 JCI World President Bertolt Daems is visiting Sheffield to hear about JCI Sheffield and our impact in the community! Come along and hear about his plans for the year and get involved in the start of one of our community projects to reclaim the union flag . . .
So the plan for the evening is . . .
18.30 – Blankets and Pillows – No it is not time for a nap after the very busy day! This is when you are all welcome to join us for an evening based around the great work carried out by The Archer Project. The Holiday Inn Royal Victoria have very kindly donated pillows and blankets for the homeless but it is our task to take them up to The Archer Project, the night does not stop when we get there though!
It would be great if everyone could meet us here to help carry the pillows and blankets but if not then be sure to meet us at The Archer Project and wear your best woolly hat!
19.00 – Pie, Peas and Woolly Hats! – Most importantly February the 10th is Woolly Hat day at The Archer Project. Dig out your best hat and wear it with pride, there are no prizes for the biggest pom pom but as always we will have fun taking part.
By this point you will probably be hungry and there will be a buffet for those empty bellies. Don’t eat too much though as you will be invited to take part in a spot of Extempore afterwards! This is a really fun way to experience public speaking. The speaker is given a random object – they then have 15 seconds to prepare for speaking for 2 minutes, the funnier the better. It’s a great way to practice your public speaking skills in front of a super friendly and supportive JCI Sheffield community!
The cost for the evening is £10 for members and £15 for non-members; this includes dinner and a donation to The Archer Project!
Earlier in the day these are the sights of Sheffield we will be showing Bertolt . . .
14.00 – Arrive at Sheffield Train Station
14.30 – Launch of the Flag Project at Fir Vale School – JCI Sheffield will be supporting the students at Fir Vale on an on-going basis in the form of mentoring programs, business placements and business liaison opportunities. Fir vale is a specialist secondary school in Business and Enterprise and is located in one of the most deprived areas of Sheffield. Due to the constant commitment of teachers and school governors, the school provides an outstanding learning environment to a wide mixed community background. This year we are working with the school as part of our ‘Flag Project’ to try to regain a sense of pride in the Union Jack and to dismiss any negative connotations associated with the flag. It is all about celebrating diversity and being proud of where we are from!
15.30 – Lord Mayors Reception in her parlour – Impact of One. This is our motto for 2012 and will be what we are talking about with the Lord Mayor and Bertolt. One person can make a huge difference with in their own community, a little bit of passion goes a long way. This will be our chance to showcase our plan for 2012 led by Sandra Pilarczyk (JCI Sheffield President), Dan Senter (JCI Sheffield Deputy President) and the rest of the fantastic 2012 Council Team.
The evening events from 18.30 are open to everyone! New members, old members, people who are curious about JCI and anyone else who fancies what we have got planned for the night. If you are interested in being involved in the daytime activities then please email us on info@jcisheffield.org.uk.
If you fancy a bit more time with the president then why not join us for a run (or walk) on Saturday 11th February. Meeting at 07.00 we will be having an informal networking session as we train for the Edinburgh Marathon on 27th May 2011 in aid of Nothing but Nets.
Curious to know more about the man we are all so excited to meet? Want to book?
Well not only is he head of the JCI network of more than 200,000 young active citizens; he also holds a master’s degree in building construction and works as the CEO of RnR group, a management consultancy company.
Since joining JCI in 2003 Bertolt has had a very active career! He was a founder member of his local chamber, has held many European and international titles, been honoured as JCI Senator No.68118 and is now World President for 2012! As well as this he is also fluent in English, German and Dutch.
He firmly believes that in a world facing so many challenges it is the young active citizens like us that will provide the solutions. It is all about putting your passion into action – which is his motto for 2012!

We did it! JCI Sheffield = Most Outstanding UK Chamber
Sunday, November 27th, 2011On Saturday 26 November, JCI members from around the UK (and Europe!) celebrated 2011 in style at the JCI UK Gala and National Awards dinner. As you will know, this was held at Kelham Island Museum in Sheffield…
…so it was all the more special when JCI Sheffield took to the stage 9 times over the course of the evening to collect a bevvy of awards!! I think it’s fair to say that yet again, we swept the board!
Named the Most Outstanding Chamber in the UK, JCI Sheffield was represented in force with over 20 members and senators in attendance – and of course, we had fantastic support (and cheering) from our Yorkshire friends from JCI Barnsley, JCI Boston, JCI Bradford, JCI Doncaster and JCI Leeds.
In summary, JCI Sheffield picked up:
Most Outstanding Chamber*
Most Outstanding Current Member*
Most Outstanding Deputy President
Most Outstanding Business Project*
Most Outstanding Training and Development Programme*
Most Outstanding Marketing and PR Programme*
Certification: Most Outstanding President of a Chamber 50 – 99 members*
JCI UK National Debate Team (Daniel Senter – JCI Sheffield, Anil Champaneri – JCI Leeds, Phil Cavalier-Lumley – JCI Bradford)
Best Debator –Daniel Senter

*These award winners will now go through to the JCI European awards which will be announced in Braunschweig, Germany in June 2012
It was also a great night for Yorkshire with JCI Leeds members collecting two gongs, JCI Boston also collecting two awards and JCI Bradford’s President Phil Cavalier-Lumley picking up the trophy for best Public Speaker! Well done Team Yorkshire!
So all in all, a fantastic end to what has been an incredible year for JCI Sheffield and our members with lots of recognition, success and new experiences to build on!
Although we still have two more events before the end of the year, it’s fitting for me to pay tribute to the JCI Sheffield 2011 Council Team who have worked extremely hard to deliver a diverse range of events and opportunities that enable everyone to create that positive change – be it in life, in business or in the community. These awards are a tribute to their efforts!
Lastly, I’d like to thank you – JCI Sheffield members. You are the heart of the chamber – you are the chamber and you are nationally recognised as being the best in the UK. Be proud of this achievement – we did it!
James Alcock on JCI World Congress 2011, Brussels.
Monday, November 14th, 2011What is JCI all about, well I’ll tell you. And this information does not come easily, it’s taken the best part of a year for me to work it out. Finally, in Brussels, the answers came to me.
I arrived in Brussels with an open mind and passion for learning, I was greeted with more passionate, energetic and enthusiastic people that I have ever seen gathered in one place, loads to learn plus amazing vibrant parties and free beer.
The opening ceremony was where the global size of JCI hit me. Walking into Expo Centre 1, a huge hall, a little early, yet there were tons of people, greeting old friends, waving their country colours and generally being happy and excited. Pumping music from the stage setting the ambiance for the night, people milling around, old friends greeting each other after a year apart, people wrapped in flags – hugging to say hello. Rows of seats happily guarded at four corners by a representatives from the country who had bagsied them. The hall filled fast, suddenly the music stopped, the sound of chatter waved to a close and through the huge speakers came a booming voice -“Welcome to JCI World Conference 2011, Brussels”. The crowd went wild!
The president from each country attending was introduced, one by one they walked down the stage, each with their own swagger, some getting huge cheers for their artistic entrances. This must have gone on for fifteen minutes, country after country, finally the UK’s president Allison Cowell was introduced, our section of the crowd went WILD, Union Flags waving everywhere. It’s at this point I realised what a massive organisation JCI is, packed into the hall were 4000 people from 100 different countries, all friendly, all with something in common.
Soon after the opening address we made our way to a brewery where we were greeted with food, beer and entertainment that will knock your socks off! Each day ended (and started) with such a party. It was here that friendships were made out of acquaintances from the day.
The day time was about learning and meeting people, the options for learning were long and diverse. Leadership, public speaking, networking, CSR, and marketing. Key notes from high flyers and business leaders and inspiration from people who have done amazing things. It was whilst at the conference I finally realised, after the best part of a year, what JCI is all about. At some levels it’s about networking with local business people, going to training events to better myself and helping to organise these events with the council team in Sheffield. But really JCI is all about making positive change in our community, it takes one person to make a difference that can ripple and affect many. There are members from other countries who get this message and they are doing amazing things to help their community by setting up projects. In doing so they are learning new skills, making new friends and, perhaps most importantly, putting something back into their community.
I have been back for one week now and I am still trying to take it all in. To be around so many people from such a variety of cultures and backgrounds with no barriers to interacting was humbling, exhilarating and sometimes emotional. As I sit typing this I miss it greatly, but I now have the passion, drive and goal to help JCI Sheffield achieve something amazing! And, because of the team in Sheffield, the UK and globally, I’m looking forward to the coming year immensely.
Stickle bricks??
Tuesday, October 25th, 2011Did anyone think they’d be coming to a JCI event, then spending an hour playing with Stickle bricks??
Well that’s what a few found themselves doing recently at a JCI personal development session on Lean Thinking… Dan Senter and James Alcock (our very own JCI Trainers) gave an overview of the basics of lean thinking. Attendees were shown the 5 lean principles the 7 wastes before being given the chance to put this learning straight into practice.
As a team they were tasked with using lean to dramatically improve performance in production of a stickle brick figure through a simple production line. By looking for the 7 wastes and working as a team they finally managed to work out some ways to improve and ended the session on a high having successfully completed the task!! Hopefully we’ll start to see some of these principles now being put into practice in the home and at work… As we move in to 2012 we’ll be looking to run more advanced courses on improvement techniques so keep checking jcisheffield for details!

JCI makes an impact at MADE
Tuesday, September 27th, 2011Last week I was fortunate enough to attend the MADE Festival in Sheffield on behalf JCI Sheffield (where I volunteer as their Personal Development Director). The MADE Event took place from 21-24 September, running a series of high profile events around Sheffield from partners including StartUp Britain, Virgin Media, Wired and TEDx. Sheffield is building a strong reputation for innovation and new technology businesses including digital media and advanced manufacturing, so I was delighted to go and help celebrate this reputation and encourage more young professionals and businesses to do the same!
I manned a stand for JCI and also attended a number of the key note speakers during the event. The line up included the Secretary of State for Business, Rt Hon Dr Vince Cable MP, who gave an overview of some key enterprise initiatives, Peter Jones CBE who gave an inspirational speech about his journey in building his business, James Averdieck, founder of Gü Puds, Julie Meyer, founder of Ariadne Capital and Wilfred Emmanuel-Jones, founder of the Black Farmer.
I was so ‘empowered’ following the talk I attended from Peter Jones that I plucked up the courage to go make my way through the crowds and thank him personally for the inspiration and give him some information about JCI; of course taking the opportunity to get a picture of the moment!!
Thanks,
Dan Senter
